The president of the Christian conservative Family Policy Network — a group best known for confronting attendees at gay pride events about Jesus’ power to cure homosexuality — sent a letter to Sen. David Vitter (R-LA) today calling on him to follow the lead of Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-NY) and resign. Vitter admitted to frequenting prostitutes in 2007, but did not step down and, unlike Weiner, never faced much pressure from his own party to do so. Family Policy Network President Joe Glover added in his letter that Republicans “are committing outright hypocrisy” as long Vitter remains in office, the New Orleans Times-Picayune reports:
“There are a lot of people that I think are committing outright hypocrisy and are forced to do so as long as he (Vitter) remains in office,” said Joe Glover, the president of the Family Policy Network, based in Forest, Va. “I don’t think the senator should put those folks in the untenable position of having to pragmatically defend his presence in the Senate.”

Glover noted, for example, that House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, and Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, the chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, had called on Weiner to resign, but had also contributed to Vitter’s 2010 re-election campaign.
An article that will be posted on the group’s website tomorrow asks, “So what did Republican leaders do about Senator Vitter? They let him off the hook.” The article continues, “[T]he public’s perception of Vitter as a sleazy, hypocritical Christian only served to tarnish the name of Christ among unbelievers.”

Indeed, while Weiner received universal condemnation from Democrats and Republicans alike, Vitter actually received a coordinated campaign of support from Louisiana Republicans and campaign donations from national Republican leaders — the same leaders who demanded Weiner’s resignation. Even former Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele saw “inconsistency” in the way his party reacted to the two scandals.

To their credit, some conservatives have spoken out against Vitter. Fox News host Bill O’Reilly said, “I don’t think Vitter should be there. Absolutely not.” Fox’s Greta Van Susteren and right-wing media provocateur Andrew Breitbart — who played a key role in bringing down Weiner — have also criticized the senator.

That's democracy for you. 58% of New Yorkers favor it. State GOP senators? Well, wait till next session if you can't cough up one more. The hinge is closing.

When it goes to court, they argue it should be decided by the legislature.

When it goes to the legislature, they argue it should be decided by the courts.

When it goes to either, they argue it should to to a vote of the people. Then back to the courts and/or the legislature. Then back to the people. Then, just delay. Blame the judge.

The genius of democracy is that you can drive hypocrites nuts by coming back, year after year after year after year after year. Endlessly. Like the NY legislator who changed his mind after he got outed earlier this year. And then the next year, someone else.

Meantime, a couple, 84 and 91, together sixty-one years, figure they can wait a bit longer.

This past week Max Heller died. He was 92 years old.

Heller was mayor of Greenville in the 1970s. He turned downtown Greenville from the slum it was into the public amenity is now is.

Out of the chaos of Nazi-occupied Austria Heller made his way to Greenville, and out of the chaos of World War II he managed to reconnect with, and marry, his childhood sweetheart- one of the most charming people I ever met.

Heller ran for governor and lost to Republican legend Carroll Campbell, who piously declared he knew nothing about those ads asking voters whether they wanted a native South Carolinian or a Jewish immigrant from Austria to lead the state. Campbell won.

The Campbell family burped up a message of condolence, but the campaign they countenanced should lie heavy on their consciences for generations. Max Heller has a statue in downtown Greenville. Carroll Campbell is just dead.

And now the same sort of bullshit has surfaced in Kentucky:

Lexington attorney Larry Forgy, a Republican who lost the 1995 governor's race against Democrat Paul Patton, said the only reason Beshear picked Abramson to be his running mate was "to attract New York and Hollywood Jewish money" for the campaign.

"There's no other reason why to pick a big-city, liberal mayor to run for lieutenant governor in a rural, conservative state like this," Forgy said.

The Nerve is wringing its last one over lack of transparency in the educational system.

So where were they- and are they- over decisions like the USC medical school's decision to award faculty- and then emeritus status- to George A Rekers?

Rekers made a career of claiming he could cure gay people. On CNN, Anderson Cooper has run a tragic series on how Rekers promised parents he could "cure" their "sissy" boys. At least one of his "patients" ended up killing himself.

Rekers built a self-promoting body of "scientific" literature that other hate-curists rely on to this day. In his spare time he co-founded the rabidly anti-gay Family Research Council, which now says they've never heard of him.

Why the change?

Because Rekers got caught coming home from a holiday in Europe with a very young, hung, man he hired from a rent-boy website to "handle his luggage.'

A federal judge in California who was asked to invalidate the Prop 8 ruling of another judge because the latter is gay and so might want to game the result to he could get married- and still not benefit from the vast panoply of federal marriage-based benefits barred to gay Americans under the Defense of Marriage Act- has been dismissed as the Village idiots' Convention Resolution it is.

The judge- who is African-American- asked the Village Idiots if they'd move to recuse him from a case involving African-Americans. Nope, they said. Just the queer judges. They got that agenda, you know; they'll strangle babies and attack LDS temples and call people names and give them bad hairstyles if they don't get their way.

This is the last, dessicated strategy of the haters. They launched it over a decade ago against a judge in North Carolina who came out. Never mind that an openly gay member of the Oregon Supreme Court voted against allowing marriage equality in that state because he thought the law didn't support it. Jewish judges should be barred from cases involving religious choices. Women should be barred from ruling on cases involving men. Sentient judges should be barred from ruling on Terri Schiavo.

But by being nominees they get treated seriously by the US media, they get nationwide attention by appearing in the debates like the one tonight in Manchester, New Hampshire. They can raise money and fly around the country like a big shot. The New York Times and Washington Post carry long, dutiful profiles. CNN and Fox News hang on their pronouncements. They get to be somebody, rather than just an aging ex-Speaker or defeated Senator or obscure pizza executive or ranting congressperson.

The CNN presidential debate is on, and almost halfway through, the candidates are coming across as The Seven Dwarves.

Harking back to the "boxers or briefs" moment with Bill Clinton in 1992, moderator John King is asking a "this or that" question of the candidates: Elvis or Johnny Cash, Leno or Conan, blah, blah. Pointless.

Ron Paul is the grouchy grampa, railing about how people ought to be able to opt out of every federal program. Rick Santorum adopts a patronizing expression answering questions. Newt Gingrich is angry. Michelle Bachmann wants to repeal everything. Herman Cain says the best way to run government is to elect a president who knows nothing about government. Pawlenty is dull. Romney is Romney.

Asked how he could guarantee 5% annual economic growth year after year to fund his economic plan, T-Paw got all Peter Pan and said if we all clap our hands hard enough we can make it happen. The President is a "declinist"; we're not Portugal or Argentina. Then he invoked Brazil and China and said if they can do it we can, too.

Ron Paul waved his arms and said if we shut down government and return to an economic nature, hell, we can have 15% growth!

T-Paw bashed Romney yesterday on the talk shows, saying he and the President created "Obamneycare." Asked to make his case to Romney in person, Pawlenty flopped like a gaffed salmon.

Remember in 2008 when the Freepers got all foamy over Obama not wearing a flag pin? It made him even more exotic and unAmerican. Among the seven tonight, Santorum, Romney, Gingrich and Paul aren't wearing flag pins. Cue the outrage...

Gingrich says loyalty tests for government workers should be universal. It worked great against the Communists, he adds.

All but Paul and Cain want to amend the Constitution to enforce marriage inequality. They all like DADT and want it back. But as TPM notes, nobody wanted to rail on the issues very long- big change from 2003/04.

Mrs Bachmann crafts a nice formulation to support the death penalty- she's for the right to life from conception to "natural death."

Newt wants to move half the employees of Homeland Security to the border to help patrol.

Nobody talked about cutting defense spending.

T-Paw says Iraq is a shining success and that Sarah Palin was better qualified to be vice president than Joe Biden.

For several years I have argued that while the 1950s model of economic development SC follows is a mug's game guaranteed to soak taxpayers for buzillions in tax shifts and underpay workers to bolt things together, the state has to play the game as it is played until somebody here realizes a knowledge economy model is the gateway to a future that will lift South Carolina from its present role as a home for political eccentrics, parochial idiocy, the received wisdom of pharmacists whose reliance on government funding frees them from tending their counters and sucking the public teat, corrupt government, bad education, worse wages, and a general sense of diving to the bottom to out-shame Alabama and Mississippi in its rage to give away the state's birthright for whatever time the tax codes requires a pandered company to fully depreciate its factory and then move to Malaysia.

The Post & Courier, whose readers preen over being the cultural center of the state- such as it is, once Spoleto is over- begs to differ:

Here in South Carolina, we enjoy a right-to-work status that makes our state very attractive to companies considering where to locate. Currently, 22 states have right-to-work laws that protect the rights of workers not to be forced to join or pay dues to a union as a condition of employment. Right-to-work states must protect that tradition, which is under attack as union numbers continue to drastically decline.

The last thing we need is for the union to force the same formula on South Carolina that helped bring Detroit to its knees. In fact, the formula we have is working just fine. Consider this. The auto industry has created 85,000 full-time jobs across the state. Many are available thanks to international automotive plants in places like Greer, Timmonsville, Spartanburg and throughout South Carolina. We are fortunate to be such a sought-after location for successful manufacturers to bring new jobs to South Carolina. And, it is important to note that at the same time that South Carolina was developing these 85,000 new jobs, UAW members were losing almost 1.2 million throughout the U.S.

Smart people work for the P&C, but this editorial excerpt reads like an essay contest winner from the Village Idiots' Convention in Woody Allen's Love and Death.

If we're such a haven, why does the state government crow about ten jobs here and 25 jobs there? Why are the big gets increasingly part of the historical record? Why do legislators give nearly a billion to Boeing and deny a couple of hundred mil to Amazon to please the objections of Wal-Mart, through whose portals pass something like a quarter of all the currency in circulation in the US. And when has Wal-Mart set itself up as the tribune of small business in Soutrh Carolina? That politicians can make such arguments with a straight face must either be an indictment of our educational system or the insularity of the political class in Columbia and their student council struggles to be the most popular.

A right to work law simply means workers can join a union if they want to, but they can't be forced to join one. Where in SC is the socialist menace of unionism rearing its greedy head, demanding wages comparable to the highest paid in the nation, rather than the lowest? Where are unions in this state demanding that the state give its workers the same benefits workers for, say Boeing, in Washington, obtain?

There is much to be said for both sides of the argument, but the chattering/political class in SC wants to shut down the debate entirely. They want SC workers to be grateful for wages of any sort and work comparable not just to the worst, bottom of the league table southern states, but places like Nike factories in China and anything made in Singapore.

Why does being a right to work state mean the only course of progress is to dive to the bottom? Why do SC workers have to settle for less and less and less and why should they be so grateful for the privilege of being poorer and poorer?

Just as a thought experiment, P&C, if 22 states are so wise as to adopt right to work laws, what are the majority- 28- doing wrong? Which states are on which side of the divide, and how are they doing economically? If Detroit dragged the nation down because of union obligations, how do we explain how Detroit has repaid its loans and roared back in sales in two years? Why doesn't the P&C empyrean note the haircut UAW members took to help restore took to revive the US auto industry- which, as much as anything, owed its decline to building crappy vehicles?

In the states where US and international manufacturers have located, what's been the aggregate cost to taxpayers? How does that balance off against the loans to Detroit? Will we get those tax offsets and forgivenesses back as fast as the ones we got from Detroit?

If, as Mitt Romney urged before he claimed credit for the solution, Detroit's Big Three had been allowed to fail (at the same time others on the right were arguing the financial system should also be allowed to fail) how would we as a nation have dealt with three or four millions of additional unemployed Americans? Would Republicans in Congress have insisted on the screwings they have administered to those who are already unemployed? Letting benefits lapse for months? Insisting, as Senator DeMint does, that they should first be taxed and then be required to be paid back as a loan? Given that the parts supply chain has become so tightly integrated worldwide, even the foreign manufacturers of vehicles in the US would have been impacted.

God help us, the Republican Party has gone so far to reactionism and corporate suckuppery, is there anything left but to re-enact the Smoot-Hawley Tariffs and the Alien and Sedition Acts?

And in this benighted state, all of that- among the ruling class- seems to make perfect sense. In the 150th anniversary of the Civil War that began here, the only thing that seems to have changed is that the rulers are pleased to screw over people who are both black and/or white. Race seems to have been supplanted by money. Elderly Teabaggists disprove the argument that insanity is the ability to hold several opposing thoughts by arguing that the national debt will burden their grandchildren (who'll make out like bandits under the Bush tax cuts) but at the same time federal medical benefits should be denied to the same, ageing grandchildren under 55. Screw you.

They've used the makeup time to expand their grasp.

Where once planters ruled South Carolina, now international corporations do, and the kneeling and pandering and hypocrisy of their heirs in the State House ought to make them vomit. Often. Daily. So one would hope.

Strange days, these: the president pro tem of Boys' State sued the Governor when she demanded they return for a special session to address her demands for creating new state agencies she can control to not replace other state agencies she can't. The Boys' State leader got the Supreme Court to smack her down.

Now he says Boys' State should take up her plans.

All of which means four things:

1. the legislature will cut off at the ankles any governor who dares challenge their power.

2. then they will toss the governor some scraps, just to remind who's who who's who.

3. everyone will claim a great victory for reform.

4. nothing will change, except that there will be more legislatively appointed boards controlling more wasteful agencies. And, as the governor demonstrated with SC ETV, reform simply will mean canning the old board and installing a more pliant one. ( Hello, Joey Millwood! And hello again, hatemonger Millwood!)

But otherwise, nothing will change.

So the SC education chief, a former general, has told the US government- and the SC Board of Education-to take a hike when it comes to applying for federal education funds:

But Zais immediately issued a statement that he would not seek the money, saying the state's schools need less federal intrusion to succeed, not more.

Governor Haley's enforcer on the Board issued a three-line whip:

Board member Michael Brenan, who is Gov. Nikki Haley's appointee on the board, said the request is moot. Haley will not sign any application for the federal grants, he said.

"Zais and Haley won't sign. Therefore, there will be no application," said Brenan, of Columbia.

Seems like there's little enough state intrusion in education, given the state of buildings and class sizes and test results and graduation rates, but the Republicans seem to think there's some sort of magivcal-thinking educational Laffer Curver, where the less you spend, the more kids learn. Make teachers take unpaid work days. Listen to the consultant/bloggers who trawl constantly for new candidates to go to Columbia to rage against education at every level. Guarantee business a stupid and easily turned-over workforce with no rights in the guise of "tort reform". Feed panic about a nonexistent threat to right to work laws. Then, a la the Governor, work to drive off major employers who made deals before she took office, then go down to Charleston to "cheerlead" for other, vastly larger, deals made before she took office.

General Mick Zais, superintendent of public education, proves Adlai Stevenson's observation that politics is like a well- you can only draw up what's already in it.

It's common enough in government to see the electeds kick the can down the road two years at a time.

When it comes to education and economic development, however, they seem keen to kick the can over the horizon.

Governor Haley- who the other days announced she'd be a "cheerleader" for Boeing (not the first time she's promised to haul out the poodle skirts and pom-poms)- apparently believes bill signing ceremonies are pep rallies:

Best as I can remember, it was Casper Gutman who started the trend of pop songs used as bridges on conservative talk radio. Schwarzenegger used "We're Not Gonna Take It" as a theme song when he ran for governor (in retrospect, maybe "Having My Baby" would have been more forthcoming).

Coast to Coast AM has a remarkable eclectic playlist between segments, and longer cuts than most shows (can you tell I'm an insomniac?).

Here's the point: using pop tunes makes you seem hip, and the only thing the ones used shows is how old the radio entertainer- or governor- is. Or whom you're targeting as an audience. It's a demographic thing.

So when FITSy complains about something like the governor's eccentricities, they may be interesting- a sort of Sarah Palin email trove on a CD- but don't for a minute believe the complainer gives two slaps about minority musicians losing out on royalties.

Maybe he's just peeved his claimed ex-inamorata hasn't used any songs from the rock band he was in before he signed up with Governor Sanford.
