We want to know what we want to know because we want to know it.

Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano was on CNN's State of the Union show today. Grilled by Candy Crowley about the effectiveness of the "show us your junk" machines and the grip-and-grin pat downs, Napolitano defended their use and added that "we're getting a lot more contraband" since the new procedures were put in place.

Her comment confirms something many have long suspected.  This stuff is only partly about aircraft passenger safety. It's as much or more about the government looking to new ways to gather and store information about Americans that'd be none of their business without an endless war on terror to use as a pretext.

  1. Is it just me or does Napolitano remind anyone else of a cardboard box that has a tape recorder inside that activates when the box is approached?
