Columbia political blogger Wolfe Reports has vanished.
Former SC blogger Micah Snead has apparently been smeared in the way right-wing bloggers love to practice rather than engaging opposing views on their merits, and has given up his blog.
Take Down the Flag seems have gone silent as well.
Indigo Journal, The Official Progressive Voice in South Carolina, has taken an extended "holiday break" but seems to have switched to Twitter.
These are disturbing losses to the blogdom in South Carolina. The list of thoughtful blogs in this state seems to diminish by the day.
Glad you're still at it. Others may have concluded it's like lecturing a herd of cows - rabid, flank-strapped cows.
ReplyDeleteA good question would be why do the list of thoughtful blogs in South Carolina seem to diminish by the day?
ReplyDeleteI would imagine, though I can't say for certain, that five years ago there was a wider range of opinion in the SC blogdom. Today, there appear to be a handful of bloggers who would be classified as being left of center who still manage to write occasional throught-provoking posts.
On the right, I don't see it - and I'm certainly more inclined to lean toward the right than the left. Nearly everyone on the right seems to be either bought and paid for, or angling for someone to pay their way.
Either no one on the right is able to intelligently discuss the issues or, more likely, they're afraid of upsetting the powers that be and possibly cutting into some future revenue source.
No matter what the excuse, political debate in this state is that much the worse for it.
Here's an excerpt from a NYT op-ed that might explain the paucity of serious discussion in the local blogdom:
ReplyDelete"What’s not transient, unfortunately, is the technological trend that drives much of this. It isn’t just that people can now build a cocoon of cable channels and Web sites that insulates them from inconvenient facts. It’s also that this cocoon insulates them from other Americans — including the groups of Americans who, inside the cocoon, are being depicted as evil aliens. It’s easy to buy into the demonization of people you never communicate with, and whose views you never see depicted by anyone other than their adversaries."
