Ordinarily, congressional Republicans are the first to hobble and chastise the Postal Service. But one has courageously stood up for your friendly neighborhood letter carrier in the face of Amazon's plan to borrow some drones off their rotation over Pakistan to use for Christmas deliveries:
Rep. Ted Poe has some concerns about Amazon’s plans to deliver packages by drone.
Speaking on the House floor Tuesday, the Texas Republican said Jeff Bezos’s Amazon Prime Air proposal could pose privacy concerns, and it might just put the mailman out of business.
“In just a few years, he says people will be able to order something online and have it in their hands within 30 minutes by the use of drones,” he said. “Sounds like something out of the ‘Jetsons’ doesn’t it? Gone will be the days of the neighborhood mail carrier, soon there will be a drone to replace him.”
Poe warned that the drones could be used for surveillance rather than delivery, and called for Congress to set clear regulations for the use of domestic UAVs.
“Think of how many drones could soon be flying around the sky,” he said. “Here a drone, there a drone, everywhere a drone in the United States.”
Just kidding, Pakistan.
