Here's a new offering from the comedy stylings of National Review columnist Jonah Goldberg, who rightly assesses the problem the House Republicans have: they don't want a Speaker, they want a presider:
The other potential replacements — Jim Jordan (R., Ohio), Jeb Hensarling (R., Texas), and Daniel Webster (R., Fla.) — are solid conservatives with a much deeper grasp of policy than McCarthy. The irony is that they may not get the spot precisely because they have more fully formed legislative and ideological priorities of their own. The base wants the speaker to follow their lead. His solution : bring back a retread: the sulky, motor-mouthed, ethically compromised, thrice-married, colonies on the moon-promising Newt Gingrich: himself thrown out by the House Republicans for ineffective leadership.
