I still love you, Alice B. Toklas-

The wonderful Writer's Almanac reminds us today is the birthday of Alice B. Toklas, born in 1877 in San Francisco. She met Gertrude Stein on her first day in Paris in 1907 and they spent the next four decades together.

When Gertrude died in 1946, Alice stayed on in their flat at 27, rue de Fleurus. Their relationship having had no legal standing, Stein's family claimed the couple's legendary art collection, leaving Alice in increasingly straightened circumstances. She died in Paris in1967, a month short of her 90th birthday, and is buried with Gertrude at Pere Lachaise, on either side of a shared headstone.
