Washington state senator Ellen Craswell migrated from moderate, Dan Evans-style Republicanism to Pat Robertson fundamentalism to the American Heritage Party. Her 1996 run for governor- which featured her explication of God's plan for state government and opposition to "special rights for sodomites"- was a disaster. Commentator John Carlson says part of her legacy is a caution for the party:
"The larger lesson for the GOP is that if it doesn't stand for a clear, principled agenda on the issues that matter to most people, the vacuum will be filled by issues that matter most to some people."
