Snead has a snippet from a WSJ report on Congressional agreement to pass a compromise revision of the GI Bill:
"Democrats accepted a White House-backed provision allowing veterans to transfer education benefits to their spouses or children, a proposal also supported by President Bush and Republican presidential candidate John McCain. The Arizona senator said without it, the education benefits would harm military retention."
This is how something like 1400 different federal benefits became dependent on marital status. It's a shame, though, that comparable wartime bravery- and the justifiable lauding of it that goes on among the political classes- carries on full-throatedly while a silent corps of service members are left further and further behind in how we reward their service.
Even Sam Nunn admits there are lots of gay and lesbian service members serving with distinction on active duty.
