Lindsey Graham (R-SC) defends adulterer John Ensign (R-NV). (Lindsey is a sinner, too).
Republican Senators are coming to the defense of their colleague, that great defender of traditional values and marriage, John Ensign:A born-again Christian and a crusader for traditional values, Ensign was a member of the Promise Keepers, a Christian evangelical ministry that emphasizes family values. In a statement, Promise Keepers said that the group “prays for John Ensign, and we are encouraged that he is pursuing reconciliation with his family.” Most Republicans withheld judgment, and none called on him to resign. Still, the story of his affair continues to unfold, and more damaging details could add pressure on the senator to resign, aides and strategists said.Really, Ms. Lindsey? Is that because they wouldn't let you back into the US military if you did share?
“I think he will be welcomed back by his colleagues and go back to being a good senator,” said Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), who said Ensign shouldn’t have resigned his leadership spot.
Graham downplayed the political impact this would have on the GOP, saying, “Most Americans look at this as a personal situation.”
Graham let out a laugh and said: “I’ve got plenty of sins that I’m not going to share with anyone else.”
The GOP caucus gave David Vitter a standing ovation, but threw Larry Craig under the bus. (It's that sleeping with women vs. sleeping with men thing.) Which brings us back to Lindsey Graham. He's quite willing to let Ensign, who broke one of the Ten Commandments, off the hook. But, Lindsey's always willing to interfere when same-sex relationships are an issue. It's odd. But, then, Lindsey's odd in that way single men of a certain age are.
DeMint says he didn't know about Ensign's affair
Sen. Jim DeMint (R-S.C.), the D.C. housemate of Sen. John Ensign (R- Nev.), said he had no knowledge of Ensign's affair and had no immediate response when asked if Ensign should resign.
When reporters asked the difference between Ensign's affair and the sex scandal of Sen. Larry Craig (Idaho), whom DeMint urged to resign, DeMint only said, "I'm not going to say right now," but did say he approved of Ensign's resignation from his leadership position.
"I'm just trying to absorb what happened," DeMint said. "I have not talked to him. He's been in Nevada, and I think he's coming back next week. I haven't seen him since the announcement. I'm just trying to get my bearings on the whole thing. I hear he's intent on coming back and being a good senator for his state, and that's what Sen. McConnell told us."
In a broader context, DeMint acknowledged the GOP's focus on morality and family values opens the party up to charges of hypocrisy, but said Democrats are in the same situation.
"All elected officials have a credibility problem right now, I think, and it's up to us to earn the trust of the American people. For a lot of reasons, I think the campaign promises like we heard in the last election have not been met, so credibility is a problem. People don't like hypocrites, so we've got to live up to what we say."
Senate GOP Leader Mitch McConnell (Ky.) announced Ensign's resignation as the GOP Policy Chair at a Republican lunch early Wednesday afternoon.
Here's a thought experiment: has Senator Graham got something he can wield so big that he can't be outed? Or is he enough the useful idiot on other issues that the Morals Party can look the other way? Why isn't Savvy himself working this vein to purge his party of the sodomites? Or is the GOP Senate caucus worried that if they offer up one it'll be harder to cover for the others?
And what ever happened to that bullshit story Will Folks and Mike Rogers peddled about a homo scandal in the SC GOP? Increasingly it appears Anaconda sold Rogers a bill of goods.
