“If we can raise the awareness in South Carolina that there are people very much like us outside the state that have interest in things that we would be interested in, then it could only help,” Bannister told The Palmetto Scoop. “I’m not looking to spend any money on curling but it can’t hurt to recognize that our friends north of the border have an interesting hobby.”
Bannister said that raising awareness about curling in the state could draw more people to South Carolina — a state where the $18 billion tourism industry is king.
“No one is going to come here just because we like curling, but people could recognize we are fairly progressive and willing to look at other cultures,” he said. “They may say ‘if they’re for curling, I’m for them.’”
...And, there really aren’t any drawbacks, Bannister said. “Any closer relations with Canada seemed like a good idea to me,” noting former South Carolina House Speaker David Wilkins’ recent tenure as U.S. Ambassador to Canada.
Probably not these curling leagues, though. They look like a drawback.
