According to modern US conservatives, the Founding Fathers were a village idiots' convention

As their voter base recedes and ages and dies, conservative apologists stick to their anti-creative, anti-intellectual mantra. Mary Katherine Ham's new Weekly Standard meme is the unemployed will call themselves artists and make working stiffs pay for it while the "artists" and "writers" lounge about in coffee houses journaling.

Jonathan Chait fisks her selective quotation.

Somewhere, Richard Florida is laughing.

South Carolina's economic development horizon is receding. When you make people who create strange, liberal "Others" you guarantee staying stuck with SC's 1950's economic development model- bribing big companies with land and tax breaks to hire people to do back office, bolt-stuff-together jobs until another state- or nation- makes them a better offer.

As FITS News' Will Folks demonstrates almost daily, SC conservatives have a vested interest in a crap education system and inefficient, costly, unhelpful public services. They get their government paychecks raging against the government they are elected to govern, then get re-elected by claiming it refuses to change. Their consultants get their paychecks from campaigning for them. They have utterly no interest in change and as long as they can land a factory every few years their bread-and-circuses charade keeps them in power.

It's just a huge, endless celebration of stupid.
