Senator Jim DeMint (R-Charter/Comcast)

Senator Jim DeMint has introduced a bill to "protect consumers" by leaving them to the tender mercies of cable/internet providers.

Regulation of the provision of internet services- commonly called "net neutrality"- is abhorrent to Senator DeMint. Net neutrality would require internet providers who control the wires to treat competing service providers the same, rather than, say, charge users based on whether they downloads lots or a little.

Basically, DeMint is trying to reinstate the anticompetitive model the Bell System used for long distance phone calls before it was broken up.

Probably doesn't hurt that it's an election year and the cable companies have boatloads of cash.
