Lotta fuss this week about the results of the special election in New York's 26th congressional district.
A Democrat won the race, in a district that's been Republican since the earth cooled.
All the pundits are calling the result some kind of national referendum about the GOP congressional plan to repeal Medicare.
The national parties and Supreme Court-mandated spend-what-you-want-PACS dropped a lot of coin into the race.
But there was also a Teabaggist in the race, who drew off about 10% of the vote from- well, somewhere. He was apparently a former Democrat who'd not fared well in several previous offerings of his services to the electorate.
The question no one seems to have asked in the media is this: once you win an improbable seat in Congress, how do you keep it?
Take that Grayson guy in Florida. Won a GOP seat, held it one term, got his ass kicked right out. He was the John LeBoutillier of the Democratic Caucus.
Or-feeling historical?- remember Wyoming Congresswoman Jeannette Rankin. She got elected in 1916, just in time to vote against the US entering World War I. She lost her seat in 1918.
Rankin won re-election to Congress in 1940, just in time to vote against the US entering World War II.. She lost her seat in 1942.
Freak elections are just that.
