Former North Carolina congressman Charlie Rose- known as Mr Tobacco for his reflexive support of the industry- has died at the age of 73.
Mr Rose served in Congress from 1973 to 1997. After retiring he set up as a lobbyist. As The New York Times noted without comment, his client list was surprisingly ecumenical: "[He] represented a range of clients, including oncologists and R. J.
Reynolds, the tobacco company, with which the firm still has a contract."
