A group of state representatives has decided something is missing from North Carolina public schools: the nation’s first president.
A bill filed last week in the N.C. House would take $1 million in proceeds from the lottery to put portraits of George Washington in schoolhouses across the state.
Any school that requested would get a grant to put a framed portrait of the Father of Our Country in “a dignified location and manner so as to educate students about one of the most important figures in the nation’s history and an enduring model of character, leadership, and civic responsibility,”according to the bill.
It’s supported by a quartet of Republicans, including Rep. John Torbett of Gaston County and Rep. John Burr of Stanly County.
The bill has been referred to the House appropriations committee, where presumably it will vie for attention as legislators piece together an education budget expected to top $12 billion.
UPDATE: A Twitter follower pointed out to me that Mount Vernon already offers schools free portraits of George Washington.
