The eternal weirdness of politics

The New York Times' "Disunion" series about the Civil War becomes more interesting by the day. The latest is on racial politics in the North.

African-Americans didn't care much for Lincoln's- and the Republicans'- stands on slavery, but they detested his opponents. And as states began seceding, white voters blamed African-Americans.
