The predictable and the unpredictable

At Crooked Timber John Quiggin has an interesting  piece on the situation in Egypt and its larger potential implications.

It's a complicated and volatile matter, and there doesn't seem to be much to be gleaned from television reports, which seem to be mostly reporters pointing cameras off their hotel balconies and talking about what they see without knowing much about what is going on- or, more particularly- what's driving it all.

I dunno much about this sort of issue. But I'll bet you this- the trouble will spread, the region will further destabilize, and the price of oil will go through the roof.

Some people will regret they didn't support more mass transit options years ago when we could have built them on the cheap.

Republicans will call for drilling in ANWR.
