Bubba Clinton's been making the rounds in North Carolina:
'A few minutes before 7 a.m. on Wednesday, Clinton climbed into the back seat of a large gray SUV to begin what has become a typical day on the campaign trail. He planned to make seven stops in towns scattered along 180 miles of Interstate 95: Apex:
Sanford:
Lillington:
Dunn; Hope Mills, Lumberton and Whiteville:
One forlorn campaign aide, glancing over the morning's itinerary, guessed that only the most unfortunate long-haul truckers had ever visited the same places in one day.'
Bubba reminisced about what it was like being in a place like Hope Mills, omitting how fast he beat feet once he got the chance:
'During law school, he "worked six jobs, but never more than three at a time." Because of debt, he and Hillary were "poor as church mice." But then, "gosh, it turned out pretty good"... $109 million later.
Sending Bubba down east in NC makes good sense. It's busy work. The big press outlets don't like traveling to places like where he goes, and the local press can be counted on to fawn and stroke his ego. No one will ask hard questions. The region is full of small towns, as the Post article says, where a president has never appeared and probably never will again. So he gets crowds predisposed to like him for making the effort, and because he's working territory that votes overwhelmingly Democratic anyway- well, at least the overwhelmingly white audiences he draws. In this part of the state, he's not America's first black president, and we can't find any time he has mentioned that particular badge of honor (In 2001, after a dinner in which he mentioned it a lot, Congresswoman Maxine Waters responded she had no idea what people mean when they talk about Clinton being "the first black president. "I don't know what that means. I don't know what that means," she commented as she walked away).
