It was ten months ago that Waldo decided he needed to branch out from the radio broadcasts ("by electrical transcription" as you will recall from Laura). So The Journal was launched, and we ended up his faithful amanuensis.
We were in Port Angeles, Washington then, on the north coast of that state, only 80 miles but three hours by ferry and drive from Seattle, eighteen miles from Canada. We've been thinking of PA lately as it's 50 degrees cooler there. Stephenie Meyer's best-selling Twilight novels about teen vampire love are set in Forks, about fifty miles west of PA, where they get 240 inches of rain a year and everyone has a green mossy sheen.
What with one thing and another, and the weird tug of family thing that begins to work like a tractor beam when one is middle-aged, we came home to the Carolinas in January. We have been pleased with the choice so far. It's considerably warmer here- to a fault the last few days, like 50 degrees difference- and the days are an hour longer. On the other hand, we can't do Hockey Night in Canada any more.
One of the things that has pleased and surprised us there is that while bloggers are fewer than in the technoworld of the Northwest, they are friendlier here. Complete strangers who have stumbled across Waldo have dapped us (see, we got the Obama moves down), and we have been grateful for the recommendations and links several Palmetto bloggers have generously offered. We're grateful for the welcome. There is something about the South that makes the most tenuous connections seem lifelong. Or, as someone we can't presently recall once said, "Southerners are nice until they are mad enough to kill you."
All of which is as a prologue to wish a happy hiatus to Not Very Bright, who has decided to take some time off. It seems to involve family and some labs (the dog kind). We envy him his other- things-in life to concentrate on. Even though we don't write from a basement, wearing pajamas all day, we will miss his thoughtful observations, and will welcome him back when he feels the time is ripe.
If/when you are in the lowcountry you must come to one of our blogger meet ups.
