Compared to that lot, SC's county- level corruption- it seems we get an arrest or indictment a week- is decidedly junior varsity. But worse yet, we have a uniculture. One party controls practically everything. They are answerable to no one, and indulge only in internal, Soviet-style debates about ideological purity. They steal and defraud in small ways, befitting small people with small visions. Thus do they fight receiving stimulus funds in court, then take them and claim credit for them, and pass bills to give people with vacation homes breaks from property taxes and lay off teachers rather than raise the risible cigarette tax, thus allowing ever-increasing expenditures on public health for all the people who get cancer and making the work force of the future even less able to compete because it's more fun to hate on the schools than to get serious about improving them.
New York and Illinois have full-spectrum corrupt cultures. Whoever's in power feeds at the trough. In the Carolinas, for decades, it's been uniparty system: them as what gets a majority, gets the spoils.
Here they come home to plead for another gerrymandered term, promising- like Jackass Joe Wilson and Senator Jim DeMint and Adulterer in Chief Mark Sanford and Druggie Tom Ravenel- to fight ideological wars that benefit no one, and to bring home no bacon- and all while the lobbyist-provided french onion soup they slurp without a spoon drips from their chins, like old Russian commissars from Ninotchka who've never seen silverware before. But all in the name of ideology.
