Since 1948 the BBC has presented The Reith Lectures, in which leading minds address the pressing ideas and problems of the time in a seres of radio commentaries. The 2010 series has just begun. Along with several past years' lectures, they can be downloaded from here.
You listen to one and despair that not even NPR can muster something of this quality.
