Latest Dreamliner design prob came from SC; state unlikely to cash in on 737 surge

Portfolio.com, citing a paywalled Wall Street Journal story, says Boeing's Dreamliner's first delivery was pushed back after a new design flaw was found.

Seattle media also have reports. The P-I's aviation blog is here.

The Seattle Times reports the design flaw originated at Vought Aircraft's North Charleston, SC plant. After many delays and production problems, Bought bought the plant outright, establishing its presence in SC.

Boeing's also reporting it will increase 737 production to 34 a month in 2012, up three from current production levels. The company says it can sustain that level of production at least through 2014, which is good news for Boeing's Renton, WA plant but less so for North Charleston, SC. It's improbable a production line can be constructed, kitted out and staffed by then as some local Boeing boosters have predicted would happen.
