The Lord of the Flies Party

It's hard not to see TV ads for Nikki Haley, the Republican candidate for governor in SC.

What's striking is the level of intolerance and implied violence in them.

One has a portrait of Haley's opponent, Vincent Sheheen, hanging on a wall. As the menacingly-voiced announcer ticks off his flaws (Columbia insider; trial lawyer, tool of Obama; liberal) a radiating crack in the glass appears- just as you'd get from a rock being thrown.

Another makes the same points and concludes that there's a Columbia insider liberal- "right in out backyard."

That sort of talk was popular in the McCarthy era. "Say your prayers, Johnny, and be sure there's not a liberal under your bed before you turn out the light."

The effect of all this is that SC Republicans cannot tolerate any views but their own. Theirs are the only correct views. They are incapable of error and anyone who differs must be demonized.

Why are they afraid of contending views?

Embracing small-mindedness and ignorance hardly sees appropriate for "party of ideas."
