Bidness as usual

A consultant/blogger tries to freeze-frame the governor's appointments to date by arguing:

Especially in a small state like South Carolina, the people who usually are qualified to be gubernatorial appointments also run in political circles and give money to candidates. This sort of development would be expected of any governor.

He says it'd be a nonstarter as a news item but for the removal of phlanthopist Darla Moore from the USC board.

Three problems: 1) the governor has made 59 appointments out of some 1700 she will get to make. The data set so far proves nothing. 2)  Isn't this just a pay to play argument? Small state, tight, wealthy political class? 3) What about Joey Millwood?

  1. Another problem: Wiping clean, or nearly clean, entire boards such as DHEC, DNR and ETV. Sanford didn't pull that stunt. Not much institutional knowledge when an entire board is removed.
