SC snags two of history's most expensive teakettles

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has approved the application of South Carolina Electric & Gas/Santee Cooper to build two new reactors at its plant sight northwest of Columbia. The NRC's statement is here.
The two, plus two others approved for a site in Georgia, are the first new reactors cleared for construction in the US since 1978. The State reports the project, worth $9.8b, is already underway for site prep and the two units are scheduled to go online in 2016 and 2019, adding 3,000 to 5,000 construction jobs and 600 to 800 permanent operations jobs.
