In 2006 Adam Fogle called for 'flush out' of GOP 'theocrats'; said there's 'more important matters' than gay marriage

I have no conviction, if that's what you mean. I blow with the wind, and the prevailing wind happens to be from Vichy.

Mr. South Carolina Tourism, The Palmetto Scoop's Adam Fogle, has been on a tear lately when it comes to the gays. He spent July inveighing against advertising intended to draw gay tourists from Britain, complaining that a grant from Columbia to have drag act RuPaul appear at a gay pride event was pulling cops off the mean streets of that city, and criticizing grants to another Columbia gay-rights group.

How, then, to interpret his comment on a Peachpundit blog post about same-sex marriage on December 12, 2006?

Gay marriage is a lost cause for the GOP and, until we can flush out the theocratic wing of the party, it will unfortunately remain on the agenda.

It’s sad because the more moderate, Goldwater conservatives who are the true heart of the party could mostly care less about this issue and would rather just let the people decide and move the hell on to more important matters.

But this is the mess we got ourselves into by bringing in the theocratic crowd… I guess that’s what happens when you make a deal with the devil - pardon the pun.

I feel bad for guys like Jack Kingston, who are all around great representatives but have to defend the anti-gay marriage “crusaders” or face political turmoil in their districts.

If anyone saw Kingston on Bill Maher a few months back, he was a hit and had a great outing. He was funny, witty, and generally came off as the better man on every issue (granted that isn’t hard when placed next to Maher and Alec Baldwin).

But then Maher brought up gay marriage, and Kingston had to give the cliche, “marriage is between a man and a woman.” He looked like a fool and Maher slammed him - again, pardon the pun. You could tell he would rather just not discuss it, but again, he must defend theocrats lest he upset his constituents.

On July 17, 2008, Fogle was singing a different tune, complete with snarky quotation marks:

STATE ‘PRIDE’ GROUP LAUNCHES ‘SC WILL BE GAY’ MOVEMENT

In an effort to reclaim a $5,000 ad campaign targeting gay tourists in, the Gay and Lesbian Pride Movement says it is launching a South Carolina “Will Be So Gay” effort to pay for the posters placed in London’s Underground claiming that the state is “So Gay.”

That project was terminated by the SC Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism last week after The Palmetto Scoop broke the story, resulting in local outrage and national news attention.

Area gays became incensed over the cancellation of the campaign and are now fighting back against what they call the “conservative ‘Bible Belt’ politicians” that put an end to the project and today announced the “SC Will Be So Gay” fundraising effort.

Ryan Wilson, president of South Carolina Pride, said that once debt to the British ad firm Amro Worldwide is repaid, the remaining proceeds will go to benefit the SC Pride 2008 Festival and Parade in Columbia.

“South Carolina may not be ‘so gay’ currently – but we are going to show the world that we can be and we WILL BE so gay, and gay friendly some day,” Wilson said in a press release announcing the initiative.

The pride festival, which is sponsored by the City of Columbia, Club Fusion and ID Lubricants, has already received $10,000 in taxpayer money — much it to pay drag queen RuPaul for “entertainment services” — and another $15,000 in community promotions money for the Gay & Lesbian Advocacy Movement, something that has Columbia residents up in arms.

“The City Council loves to give out all sorts of our money to promote their political agenda,” said one prominent city resident who asked not to be identified. “I wouldn’t be surprised if they handed NAMBLA a blank check. But just imagine if a conservative heritage group asked for even a quarter of what they’re getting.”

You gotta wonder about the lad: if gay marriage is of no real consequence, what makes a $4942.50 invoice such a big deal?

Or is he just pandering- like Jack Kingston- to get ahead?

  2. Duh! That was before McCain had to start begging ultra-conservatives for their support.
