One down, six to go

NY State Senator Hiram Monserrate endorsed gay candidates in  New York, took gay voters' money, then- last year- crossed the aisle to caucus with the Republicans for a while before re-crossing to re-become a Democrat. All these maneuvers he negotiated to gain advancement- or protection from personal problems.

Monserrate needed the protection because he was under indictment for slashing his girlfriend with a broken bottle (40 stitches, then dragging her down a stairway and out a building lobby, claiming he was concerned and wanted to take her to the hospital). Sadly, she campaigned for his re-election.

Monserrate figured as long as he was a sitting state senator he could dodge some of the bullets, and was partly right. He didn't get convicted for the felony bottle-slashing assault, just the misdemeanor stairway-dragging episode.

In the meantime Monserrate was one of seven Democratic state senators to cross the aisle and vote against marriage equality, denying others the sanctity of the institution he couldn't be bothered to sign up for. He just bitched that it was an outrage a court issued a no-contact order against him after his bottle slashing episode.

Here's what he said:

"Two adults who are consenting and who are like-minded and within their mental capacities should be allowed to be with each other. I think it's an outrage.

Unless, apparently, they're 'mos.

Well, the State Senate dumped him anyway and he ran for election as an independent on an almost entirely anti-gay platform, seeking religionist support. Monserrate's an evangelical with ties to L. Ron Hubbard's Super Adventure Club.

Special election results in tonight. Monserrate lost almost 2-1, even though he plagiarized the Obama campaign's copyrighted campaign slogan and violated state election law by campaigning on the doorsteps of polling places.

SC politicos can skate on gay rights because there's not a critical mass yet to challenge them effectively. But that's changing.
