This week in substantively meaningless political gestures.

NC Congressman Robert Pittenger- a millionaire in a bitter primary race with a Baptist minister he only beat by 132 votes in 2016- is bellowing his support for a bill to pay the employees of the departments of defense and homeland security during government shutdowns while not paying members of Congress.

An ever-more-right-wing Republican, Pittenger despises deficit spending.

So it's interesting to note that total congressional salaries are a bit north of $93 million a year, or $255,000 a day.

The 2013 budget for salaries in DOD and DHS was 90.3 billion a year. That's $247,397,260 per day.

The 2013 shutdown ran for seventeen days. During the 2013 shutdown, an amendment to do the same that was advanced by Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill was blocked by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell due to concerns over Senate rules.
