“I'd love to sell out completely. It's just that nobody has been willing to buy.”

John Waters: This Filthy World

[WARNING: THIS REVIEW GLORIFIES BAD TASTE.]
Showtime has rolled out a 90 minute one-man show by John Waters, in which he reminisces about his early films ("that one was an 8mm feature shown once in a hippie coffeehouse, back then I didn't even know about editing. I just thought whatever came out of the camera was the movie, which in that case it was"), explains how Odorama worked, asks why you can't choose what to wear to your execution as well as what to have for dinner, tells what it's like meeting actress Kathleen Turner ("It's like being in prison. Show no fear and everything will be okay"), why to pass on sex with tricks who haven't got any books at their place, confesses his parents' views of his work ("What's the new movie about?" "Sex addicts." "Oh well, maybe we'll die before it comes out"), and considers the virtues of an all-volunteer lesbian army. The show has been described as "a 'vaudeville' act that celebrates the film career and obsessional tastes of the man William Burroughs once called 'The Pope of Trash.'"

Regrettably, Google coughs up no indications Waters and the late Humphrey Lyttelton, the BBC's urbane "purveyor of blue chip filth" ever met. It would have been soooo interesting (The Japan Times called his movie Pecker "A Disney film for perverts.")

Anyway, Water is on Showtime this month. If you sympathize with Margaret Dumont in Marx Brothers films, do not watch his show.
